How Loud Should Trailer Sound Effects Be?

The honest answer is that loudness is a system, not a number. But the system is learnable in ten minutes, and it comes down to three relationships: effects against dialogue, effects against music, and your finished mix against the platform it plays on. Here are the working values an audio engineer actually uses.

Effects against dialogue

Dialogue is the reference everything else hangs from. Set your spoken lines at a comfortable, consistent level first, and treat that as zero. Background effects like drones and atmospheres then sit 10 to 15 dB below it: present enough to feel, quiet enough to ignore. Transitional sounds such as whooshes and risers live around 6 to 10 dB below dialogue. Accent hits, the braams, impacts and sub drops that mark your biggest moments, are the exception: for their brief life they can match or momentarily exceed dialogue level, because nothing is being spoken over them if you have placed them correctly.

The test is brutal and simple: play the mix once without watching the screen. If you missed a word, an effect is too loud, no matter how good it felt.

Effects against music

Music and sound effects compete for the same space, and the fight is won by frequency separation more than by level. Before reaching for faders, carve: high-pass your effects so they stop fighting the music's bass, or duck the music 2 to 4 dB for the half second around a major hit. A braam that seems too quiet usually is not; it is masked. Cut the music's low-mids during the hit and the same braam at the same fader level suddenly sounds enormous.

The one non-negotiable rule: exactly one element owns the sub-bass at any moment. When a sub drop lands, the music's bass steps aside, even if only for a beat. Two simultaneous sub layers do not add power; they add mud and eat your headroom.

Your mix against the platform

Every major platform measures your video's loudness and turns it down if it exceeds their target. Master louder than the target and the platform flattens exactly the dynamics you spent hours building. The practical targets:
